Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

Many herbalist consider yarrow to be a medicinal herb, yarrow was used by North Americans Indians and soldiers to help stop bleeding. The history of yarrow shows that this plant possesses many medicinal properties such as a hemostatic (blood coagulation), analgesic (pain reliever) and antiseptic.





One of the great things about yarrow is the anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties the plant has. Yarrow makes a great addition to your herbal medicine cabinet.

Description

Yarrow is a member of the Asteraceae (Daisy) family Yarrow is a herbaceous plant with long fern like leaves that can grow upto 6 inches long, the yarrow plant it self can grow upto 3 feet tall and grows in small to large clusters usually spreading by its rhizomes. Yarrow flowers come in variety of colors typically ranging from white, pink, red, yellow, and purple. Typically the flowers are a umbell shape (looks like a upside down umbrella) growing upto 5 inches in diameter. The rhizomes of yarrow spread out into carpets underneath the ground to sprout new plants.












Habitat

Yarrow can be found growing in grasslands, open forest areas and meadows. It typically likes semi disturbed soils with a pH between 6.0-8.0,

yarrow is very adaptable and will grow pretty much in any soil conditions.






Harvesting

Harvesting yarrow can be done a few different ways, one is to cut the flower tops off to obtain the flowers, another is to cut near the bottom to collect the leaves and flowers. If one is only looking to harvest the leaves its best done before flowering occurs.






Medicinal Benefits

Yarrow has anti-inflammatory,anti-bacterial properties which makes a great wound healer as well as a mild painkiller. It has been used as a fever remedy as well to help stimulate sweating. The history of yarrow shows that this plant possesses many medicinal properties such as a hemostatic (blood coagulation), analgesic (pain reliever) and antiseptic.



Yarrow has been used as a medicinal herb for a very long time since, in fact in the times of ancient greece when Achilles used it on his soldiers in the battle field.
