Tree lungwort is a bright green, leaf-like lichen that tends to grow on tree bark and sometimes on mossy rocks. It can be found in large numbers in its ideal habitat.  Lungwort has many ridges and lobes, creating a lettuce appearance the underside is pale with little pockets.

Distribution and habitat

Tree lungwort can be found throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. Typically found in old-growth forest growing on the bark of trees and at times can be found on mossy rocks. Tree lungwort is a good indication of an intact healthy eco-system. Due to declining populations, L. pulmonaria is now considered rare and or endangered.

Tree lungwort has been used to treat a wide range of illnesses, from lung infections to skin issues. L. pulmonaria is prepared by using fresh lichen only. Tree lungwort is an antiasthmatic, astringent, expectorant, tonic, and a demulcent.
