Stinging Nettle

(Urtica dioica)

"Did you know stinging nettle is edible, highly nutritious and detoxifying"?

Stinging Nettle is quite easy to grow in your garden. Plant aside in a shady location or under some other trees or shrubs it will just thrive there.

It takes care of its self once established in an area. To add more to your garden simply collect the seeds in the fall and plant them in the desired location before snowfalls. Plant in early spring as soon as the ground is workable.

Habitat

Stinging nettle prefers to grow in partial shade but will tolerate full sun if adequate moisture and nutrients are available, stinging nettle love deep rich soils.

Why should you grow stinging nettle

You should grow stinging nettle for a few reasons. It is highly nutritious to eat, it also makes an excellent detoxifying tea, and adds biodiversity and nitrogen to the soil.

History of the use of Stinging Nettle

Stinging Nettle has been used as food and medicine for thousands of years. Just up to recently people have just started to realize the beneficial properties of these plants. The fibre from the plants is a lot like hemp and can be used as such. First Nation tribes used it often for cordage and clothing.
